Chaps and Levi

The old-time cowboy wore any kind of dark pants. He didn’t much care what kind they were, as long as they weren’t “Levi’s.”  These were blue denim pants made by Levi Strause, who used metal rivets to strengthen the pockets. They were very popular with laborers and miners, and that’s why a cowboy wouldn’t wear them He wanted to be sure people would know he wasn’t anything but a cowboy. Today, though, cowboys aren’t so touchy, and many of them wear Levi’s.

When working, a cowboy often wears Chaps over his pants. Chaps are leather coverings which protect the legs, especially from sagebrush, chaparral, or cactus. They get their name from the Spanish word chaparejos (chah-pah-RAY-hoha), which means leggings. There are various styles of chaps, Fringed “shotgun” chaps are favored in Nevada and California. Chaps made of sheepskin or other hides, with the wool or fur outside, are worn in Wyoming and Montana, where they are useful in shedding rain and keeping out the cold. “Batwing” chaps are considered the fanciest of all.

Chaps are used today only for working, but the old-timer also used them when he wanted to get all dressed up and show off in front of his girl. With a fancy belt, sometimes a fancy vest, jangling spurs, and a six-shooter, they were his “best Sunday go-to-meetin’ ” clothes. He was in his “full war paint,” and no mistake.
